The Challenge: Deteriorating Mineral Felt
The property originally featured a traditional green mineral felt roof. Over time, exposure to the elements caused the felt to deteriorate, leading to material fatigue and subsequent water ingress. A primary concern was the existing seam network; traditional felt roofs rely on multiple joints, which often become the first point of failure as the building expands and contracts.
The Solution: Seamless EPDM Rubber Technology
To provide a long-term, leak-proof solution, we opted for a high-performance EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber roofing system. This modern material offers several distinct advantages over traditional bitumen-based products:
Single-Sheet Installation: Unlike the previous felt roof, the EPDM membrane was installed using a single, continuous sheet tailored to the roof’s dimensions. By eliminating joints entirely, we removed the traditional “weak points,” ensuring there are no seams where water can penetrate.
Superior Durability: EPDM is renowned for its resistance to UV radiation and extreme weather conditions, preventing the cracking and peeling associated with older mineral roofs.
Thermal Flexibility: The rubber remains flexible in both high and low temperatures, allowing it to move with the structure of the property without compromising its integrity.
Results & Impact
The conversion in Dalton has successfully transitioned the property from a failing, high-maintenance surface to a sleek, modern, and entirely waterproof system. The homeowner now benefits from a maintenance-free roof with a significantly extended lifespan and the peace of mind that comes with a seamless, joint-free installation.
