The Incident: Impact Damage & Glass Failure
We were called to a property in Huddersfield where a skylight had sustained significant impact damage. A ball had been kicked at the window, shattering the glass and compromising the building’s thermal envelope and security.
The Restoration Process
A skylight repair is never just about the glass; it’s about the integration with the surrounding roof. Our team followed a rigorous restoration sequence:
Surgical Stripping: To access the frame correctly without damaging the integrity of the roof, we carefully stripped back the surrounding slates.
Specialist Glass Replacement: We replaced the broken pane with Georgian Wired Rough Cast Glass. This material was specifically chosen for its reinforced safety properties and high durability, ensuring better resistance against future impacts.
Slate Integration: Once the new glass was secured, the surrounding slates were precisely re-installed to ensure a seamless, watertight fit against the window flashing.
Ridge Maintenance: While on-site, we identified that the ridge tiles required attention. We finished the project by re-bedding and re-pointing the ridges using high-strength mortar, ensuring the entire peak of the roof was secure.
The Outcome
The skylight was successfully restored to its original strength, and the additional ridge work provided the homeowner with a fully refurbished roofline. The property is now secure, watertight, and aesthetically restored.
